Join the First Metaverse with Matrix NFT, but Watch out for a Glitch in the Matrix

透過 Matrix NFT 進入《駭客任務》的始祖元宇宙，但小心來自母體的錯誤

Do you know which movie created the first metaverse 22 years ago? Yes, that’s the groundbreaking sci-fi film “The Matrix.” This winter, its production company Warner Bros. launched 100,000 Matrix NFTs that will give owners a choice to take either a red or blue pill.

So what are the pills for, you may ask? Well, only a true The Matrix fan would know.

In this article, I’ll share my observation on the Matrix NFT avatar launch and how I spent 36 hours just to get one.

My Rookie NFT Journey

To give you a bit of background, let me share my short NFT journey for the past 2 months.

Last month, I created my first NFT, “Waiting for the Cheshire Cat,” on OpenSea. I received a few NFT airdrops, including one cute Travelogger from Matters Lab, and wrote a relevant article, “Case Study – Should You Join the NFT Universe?.”

Even so, I was always the observer and never purchased any NFTs before the news of the Matrix NFTs release caught my eyes.

But how can I resist the temptation? Especially when I am a white rabbit in the NFT universe and a big fan of The Matrix series.

What’s The Matrix NFT?

You may have heard that “The Matrix Resurrections,” the 4th film of The Matrix series, was released on Dec 22. Prior to its release, Warner Bros. announced the collaboration with NFT marketplace Nifty’s to release 100,000“transformable” NFTs on Nov 30. The plan goes like this:

On Dec 16 (now postponed to Jan 15), like The One, Neo (played byKeanuReeves),owners of the Matrix NFT would be offered a choice to either 1). take the red pill and enter the real world, or 2). take the blue pill and stay comfortably in the matrix.

Yet, the journey won’t stop just there. What’s even more exciting is the missions ahead.

After taking the pills, the Matrix NFT owners will have the chance to earn “Skill Programs” NFTs, similar to Neo learning kung-fu with a memory card in the film. These mission-dependent“Skill Programs” NFTs will serve as a prop in games, and whoever gets one can upgrade their avatar and climb up the leaderboard of their respective red or blue team.

Ultimately, the final winners will receive a super rare Matrix NFT. I’m assuming the prize might be the avatar of an actual movie character or an NFT with a particular serial number. For example, the NFT may be under the number 303. (Check out where number 303 comes from at the end of this article.)

What is Nifty’s?

Nifty’s is the company behind the Matrix NFT. It’s a young player in the NFT domain. The firm was established less than a year ago, Mar 2021 to be exact, by an ex-attorney, Jeff Marsilio. Marsilio’s last role was with NBA’s media team, and his works included VR and the well-known NBA Top Shot NFT.

Here I have to confess that I was suspicious at first when trying to do due diligence on Nifty’s.

First of all, if you google the name Nifty’s, there’s not much information you can find. I even wrongly registered a “Nifty Gateway” account and later realized that it’s the marketplace for artists like Beeple but not the seller of the Matrix avatar.

Secondly, the company’s Linkedin page indicates that it hired less than 50 staff, which made me wonder how a boutique firm of this size can obtain such a signature partnership deal from Warner Bros.

Lastly, Nifty’s said that the blockchain infrastructure, Palm network, consumes 99.99% less energy than its mainnet, Ethereum. It sounds too good to be true, especially when the company claimed that the carbon footprint of one transaction on Palm equals sending 3 emails. And most relevant contents I could find were excerpts from Palm’s own media posts.

Despite all these doubts, I see how Nifty’s can gain major partnerships by providing sustainable solutions for corporates. The matter is critical to meeting the UN’s new SDG goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.

Nifty’s also worked with partners like Warner Bros. on Space Jam NFT and UK artist Damien Hirst.

How Does Palm Network Works?

In an article “Can NFTs Actually Be Good for the Environment?” published on Palm’s website this Sep, Palm’s Executive Creative Director, Straith Schreder, explained how Palm network works. Even though it’s a sidechain of Ethereum, Palm consumes very little energy. It works with the API platform, Patch, which allows users to buy carbon offset credit and invest in carbon neutralization projects.

Schreder clarified that its initiatives could offset the carbon footprint for transactions within the Palm network and users trying to bridge between Palm and Ethereum. She also described how Palm forwent the energy-consuming “Proof of Work” mechanism like Ethereum and embraced an algorithm that values sustainability over energy used.

My Sherlock self decided to dig deeper; that’s when this article popped out.

Users who are transferring tokens from Palm to Ethereum mainnet will need to pay for gas on Palm Network, gas on Ethereum, and a carbon offset (paid in DAI).

The truth revealed. Sustainability has a price. It’s the Palm users who have to pay extra DAI to cover their carbon footprint. FYI DAI is a stablecoin operated on the Ethereum chain and tied to the value of USD at 1:1 exchange rate.

With this mechanism, I recon Palm and Nifty’s will attract companies who care about their ESG rating or artistsand NGOs who mark themselves as environment-friendly. No good deed comes unpaid, I would say so. Hence, getting yourself a cool NFT while giving back to the world sounds like the right thing to do, don’t you agree?

Pre-Sale Preparation

Let’s wire back to the main topic today. What happened before the Matrix NFT launch?

Nifty’s uses social channels of Twitter, Instagram, Medium, and Discord to communicate with its followers. When I entered Discord channel of Nifty’s, it didn’t take long before I realized how popular this project is. Fans have already set up 16 different chat rooms for their respective languages. Messages came in like crazy, and I could hardly catch up.

These chat rooms turned out to be quite helpful because getting a Matrix NFT was not an easy task.

For example, many fans may wonder why there’s no information on Matrix NFT sales when they enter the “Nifty Gateway” website as I did. Others would feel frustrated seeing an “Error 1020” message when they tried to enter Nifty’s website outside the US. Seemingly, Cloudflare only allows access from certain countries. In a case like this, a VPN service is necessary.

More people entered the chat rooms when it was closing to the sale time,1:01 pm EST of Nov 30. Rumors began to spread on Discord saying that credit cards issued in certain countries might be blocked from the purchase. However, Nifty’s website suggested that both credit cards and DAI could be used for the transactions.

New joiners became nervous and asked for solutions, especially those with little knowledge of blockchain. Then a few users offered to buy the DAI cryptocurrency and helped with the bridge from Ethereum.

And you can imagine their service charge was high, which you can use the money to buy 4 Matrix NFTs. But at a time like this, time and knowledge are the money. Later, users discovered that credit cards were indeed allowable for purchase, but it was another story.

Meanwhile, an interview on the keyman of the project was broadcaston Nifty’s Twitter account. There was excitement in the air, and everyone was waiting patiently for the countdown.

Launch in a Chaos

Nifty’s arranged a buffer and let fans enter a waiting room 30 minutes before the sale. At the time, it seemed like a good move as it anticipated a high volume of demand. But that was the only thing they did right that day.

When the time was up, everyone got a random number for their place in line, and I got 331.

I thought I was lucky. Very few people in my chat room got a number less than 10,000. So I began to think about how many NFTs I should buy, given the quota for one person was to buy 25 NFTs.

Finally, it was my turn. I happily clicked the confirm button. Then, the tragedy happened, and I got an error!

Should I refresh the screen? I quickly searched the chat room; others were seeing the same message. Desperately, I tried to get back to the queue by opening a new page on other browsers. But I sadly found out that a new number was assigned to me, and it’s over 50,000.

Nifty’s noticed the error and announced that it would temporarily stop the queue. Shortly after, it informed users of a quota cut from 25 to 5. Fans were furious when they learned about the rule change.

More errors were reported on the Discord channel, some by users who made it to the purchase page but were charged more than once. Nifty’s had to pause the line several times in the next 48 hours to fix the cloud capacity issue. What’s even worse was that some users didn’t even dare to go to bed, as they worried they might miss their spot when their respective countdown finished.

When I finally made the purchase, it was already 36 hours past the original launch time.

Sold-Out 100,000 NFTs: The Journey Doesn’t Stop There

Regardless of the bumps in the road, everything seemed to paid-off when I received my Matrix avatar. Nifty’s later gave away a free “Glitch in the Matrix” NFT to every user who participated in the launch. You can read this article and learn more about the “Glitch.”

Now fans can look forward to Jan 5, the day when the Matrix NFT holders can finally transform their avatar. According to the latest article on Medium, blue-pill takers will receive non-visual attributes such as credit score and social followers like we do in real life. In comparison, red-pill takers will acquire different skills such as will and perception to survive outside the matrix.

Nifty’s also mentioned in a Discord post that the game would be a “multi-year program.” How exciting it is! Who wouldn’t want to be “The One!”

Lesson Learned

The purchase of the Matrix NFT was my first time participating in an event like this. I would therefore like to use the marketing 4Ps to do a short case study and summarize my lesson learned.

Promotion

The IP of The Matrix itself is powerful enough; consequently, Nifty’s and Warner Bros. didn’t have to pay much attention to marketing. Instead, they only needed to spread the words, and The Matrix fans like me would rush in. Plus, many speculative NFT investors wanted to profit from this, although many of them never watched a single The Matrix movie.

A piece of advice. Given that the target customers of the Matrix NFT were not only crypto or NFT enthusiasts but alsomass movie fans of the original triquel, Nifty’s and Warner Bros. should release more media pieces or interviews explaining their partnership. Otherwise, some people may question why Warner Bros chose such a new blood in the first place. It would also be nice to share the connection between these NFTs and the latest “The Matrix Resurrections” film if any.

Product

The Matrix NFT is definitely a hot sale. The film was released 22 years ago, so it’s reasonable to assume that the original fans would expect to add more than a jpeg file into their collection.

Like the Axie Infinity game leveraging the GameFi feature to attract players, Nifty’s embedded missions and rewards to bring old fans and new ones aboard. Making the NFT avatar “transformable” and “gamified” is a brilliant idea, especially for projects coming from famous IPs.

In addition, Nifty’s NFTs are run on the Palm network; a clean and sustainable NFT is always a charm.

In terms of product features, interactivity, and sustainability, the Matrix NFT undoubtedly live up to expectations.

Price

Considering NFT price varied by projects, the cost of US$50 per Matrix NFT seemed to be such a bargain. Currently, all 100,000 the Matrix NFTs have sold out, so interested parties can only purchase on Nifty’s marketplace.

One thing to note is that these NFTs may be transferable to OpenSea, the biggest NFT marketplace globally, by Feb. Thus, the price in the secondary market may go up once the transmission is available. And remember, you also have to pay an extra fee to offset your carbon footprint if you want to move your NFT from Palm network to Ethereum.

If you consider buying one Matrix NFT from the marketplace or any similar NFT project, remember my advice in the previous article.

And don’t treat NFT as a purely speculative investment vehicle. If you want to invest, invest in the project that you have a passion for. This way, even if the heat diminishes one day, you can still hold that digital asset with pride and affection. Think about those collections you had as a child; did you buy them to make a buck? Or did you buy them out of love?

This sale channel part is arguably the worst. From the disaster launch, we could see that Nifty’s was not fully prepared for a project of this size. It should have secured enough cloud space with vendors and asked for more support from its finance partner, Stripe, but it let the fans down.

From now on, Nifty’s has to get all the issues figured out and run the next step of pill-taking games smoothly. It received thousands of support tickets after the launch; as I haven’t received an update on mine, I assume that the team is still under staff.

Any new player who obtains such a prominent case must examine its execution capacity, gather all the resources, and do numerous rehearsals before the big launch.

在這篇文章裡，我會分享我對《駭客任務》NFT 發行計畫的觀察，還有我排隊 36 小時終於買到 NFT 的血淚史。

我的 NFT 新手打怪之旅

先來點背景介紹，說明一下我短暫的 2 個月 NFT 新手打怪之旅。

上個月，我在 OpenSea 鑄造了人生第一枚 NFT <Waiting for the Cheshire Cat> (等待柴郡貓)、我接收了幾次 NFT 空投 (包括拿到Matters Lab 發行的超可愛Travelogger)，還寫了一篇 NFT 文章 <案例分析 – 你應該加入現在最火熱的 NFT 宇宙嗎？>。

即便如此，在《駭客任務》NFT 的新聞吸引我的注意前，我其實向來是個 NFT 市場的觀察者，從未買過任何一枚 NFT。

Matrix NFT 是什麼？

你可能聽聞駭客任務系列的第四部電影《駭客任務：復活》(The Matrix Resurrections) 在 12 月 22 日上映了。在電影上映前，華納兄弟宣布要和 NFT 平台 Nifty’s 合作，在 11 月 30 日推出 10 萬枚「可變身的」駭客任務分身角色 NFT，計畫如下：

這些 NFT 的持有者在 12 月 16 日 (現已推遲到 2022 年 1 月 5 日) 這天，要跟電影裡的救世主 Neo (由基努李維飾演) 一樣做出選擇，他們必須 1).吞下紅藥丸並進入現實世界，或 2). 吞下藍藥丸並繼續在母體世界舒服地生活。

但這還沒完，更讓人期待的是官方接下來安排的挑戰任務。

吃下藥丸後，駭客任務 NFT 的持有者有機會贏得「技能」NFT，如同 Neo 在電影裡可以透過插卡學習功夫，這些要靠闖關獲得的「技能」NFT 就像遊戲道具，得到的人就可以升級他們的駭客任務分身角色 (avatar)，並在各自的紅或藍隊努力晉級。

最後贏家將可以獲得超稀有的駭客任務 NFT 一枚。我猜想那些獎品可能是實際電影角色的分身，或有特別編好的 NFT；如編號 303 的 NFT 一枚。(文末可以找到編號 303 的由來)

Nifty’s 是什麼?

Nifty’s 是負責製作跟發行駭客任務 NFT 的公司。它在 NFT 業界完全是個超級新手，該公司成立不到一年，更正確地來說，它在 2021 年 3 月才由前律師 Jeff Marsilio 成立。Marsilio 上一份工作任職 NBA 的媒體部門，他的工作涉及 VR 相關運用還有知名的 NBA Top Shop NFT 計畫。

儘管有這些疑慮，我還是可以理解 Nifty’s 為什麼能拿到這些大合約，因為他們提供的是永續發展的解決方案，而這正符合聯合國 2050 年前想達到的零碳排目標。

Nifty’s 的其他 NFT 計畫包含了華納兄弟的 Space Jam (怪物奇兵) NFT 和英國藝術家 Damien Hirst 的作品。

Palm 網絡怎麼運作?

今年 9 月 Palm 在自己網站發表了一篇文章「Can NFTs Actually Be Good for the Environment? (NFT 真的對環境是好的嗎？)」，該文作者是Palm 的資深創意總監 (Executive Creative Director) Straith Schreder。文中 Schreder 解釋了 Palm 網絡是怎麼運作的：儘管身為以太坊的支鏈，Palm 消耗非常少的能量，因為它採用了 API 平台 Patch 的技術，讓使用者交易時可以同時購買碳權並選擇要投入的碳中和計畫。

Schreder 也說明他們的減碳方式可以同時抵消 Palm 網絡跟 Palm/以太坊之間跨鏈交換時產生的碳足跡，她更表示 Palm 捨棄了以太坊為人詬病的「Proof of Work (工作量證明)」機制來減少能源耗損，並採用了將永續發展的權重擺在能源使用量前面的計算機制。

我的福爾摩斯魂被開啟了，決定再挖深一點看看到底這是怎麼運作的，這時這篇文章出現了。

真相大白了，永續發展是有代價的，而這個代價由 Palm 的使用者自己負責，他們必須支付額外的加密貨幣 DAI 來抵消鏈上的碳足跡。順帶一提，DAI 是一種運作在以太坊上的穩定幣，並以 1:1 的匯率和美元掛勾。

在這樣的機制下，我相信 Palm 和 Nifty’s 可以吸引到重視 ESG 成績的大公司，和標榜親近環境的藝術家或非營利組織 (NGO)。我必須這麼說，天下終究沒有免費的午餐。因此，得到一個酷炫的 NFT 並同時回饋社會似乎是個正確的決定，不是嗎？

售前準備

讓我們回到今天的主題吧！駭客任務 NFT 上線前發生了什麼事呢？

Nifty’s 事先已經開了推特、Instagram、Medium，還有 Discord 帳號和粉絲互動。我加入它的 Discord 頻道，沒多久我就發現駭客任務的 NFT 發行計畫到底有多火；粉絲們已經成立了 16 個不同語言的聊天室，訊息不斷湧入，快到我幾乎跟不上。

這些聊天室結果非常實用，因為要買一個駭客任務的 NFT 真是困難重重。

譬如說，很多粉絲可能一開始就會跟我一樣很疑惑 Google 到的「Nifty Gateway」網站為什麼找不到駭客任務 NFT 的任何消息。有些位在美國以外的使用者則會在終於找到正確的網址後很失望地發現網站竟然回傳一個「1020 錯誤訊息」無法登入，顯然 Cloudflare 僅讓部分國家的使用者連上 Nifty’s 的網頁；這種情況下，想要買 NFT 還必須先付費買個 VPN 服務。

時間接近 11 月 30 東部時間下午 1 點的開賣時間，越來越多的粉絲進入了聊天室。Discord 群組開始有了奇怪的謠言，說某些國家發行的信用卡不能拿來支付 NFT 的費用；但奇怪的是 Nifty’s 官網又註明這次的 NFT 購買用信用卡或 DAI 支付都可以。

一些新加入的用戶開始緊張了，尤其是對區塊鏈不大熟悉的人，他們到處詢問要怎麼解決，然後幾個用戶提出願意幫忙買 DAI 加密貨幣跟協助以太坊的跨鏈操作。你可能猜到了，這些用戶要求的手續費可不便宜，一次諮詢加買幣費用比買 4 個駭客任務 NFT 還要高；但這種時候，時間跟知識就是金錢。(最後發現台灣信用卡也可以購買又是後話了)

這時，Nifty’s 的推特帳號開始直播這次計畫負責人員的訪談。空氣中彌漫著興奮的氣息，每個人都耐心地等待倒數的來臨。

災難性的開賣

為了減緩高流量的衝擊，開賣前 30 分鐘 Nifty’s 先讓粉絲進入一個等待室；當時這看起來是個很正確的做法，表示官方有考量到待會網站會有很大的流量需求，但這也是當天他們唯一做對的事了。

時間終於到了，每個人都被隨機分派到一個排隊的號碼牌，我拿到了 331 號。

當時我心想自己也太幸運了，從聊天室的回報看來，很少人拿到少於 1 萬號的號碼牌。我開始盤算等下到底要買幾個 NFT，當時官方給每個人的購買上限是 25 個。

終於，輪到我了，我高興地點了確認按鈕；然後，悲劇發生了，我得到一個錯誤訊息！

我應該要重新整理網頁嗎？我猶豫了，我趕快搜尋了一下聊天室，還有其他人也收到一樣的錯誤訊息。在絕望下，我只好試著用其他的瀏覽器開了新視窗重新排隊，但我很難過地發現我拿到的新號碼牌超過了 5 萬號…

Nifty’s 發現了問題，宣布要先暫停販售；沒多久，用戶被告知每個人的購買限額從 25 個縮減為 5 個，粉絲們得知這個訊息都非常不滿。

Discord 群組又有人回報了更多的問題，有些情況是用戶購買時系統扣了不只一次款，Nifty’s 在接下來的 48 小時為了解決雲端和流量的問題多次暫停購買流程，更糟的是，有些粉絲根本不敢睡，怕等排到自己時就不小心錯過了。

當我終於買到駭客任務的 NFT 時，距離原始開賣時間已經 36 個小時過去了。

100,000 個 NFT 銷售一空：旅程尚未結束

雖然過程起起伏伏，當我終於收到駭客任務的 NFT 時一切都值得了。幾天後 Nifty’s 宣布會給每個參與開賣的用戶一個免費的「Glitch in the Matrix (來自母體的錯誤)」NFT 作補償。若想知道什麼是「Glitch」，可以參考這個網站。

現在粉絲們都殷殷期盼著 2022 年 1 月 5 日的到來，這天駭客任務 NFT 的所有人可以轉化他們的分身角色。根據官方最新的 Medium 文章，吃了藍藥丸的玩家會被賦予隱性的屬性，如信用評等或社交平台追蹤者等數據，就跟我們在現實生活一樣；而選了紅藥丸的玩家則會得到意志力或感知力等特殊技能，讓這些 NFT 角色能在母體外存活。

Nifty’s 近期也在 Discord 頻道裡宣布接下來的任務將是超過一年的遊戲企劃，讓人超興奮！有誰不想成為「救世主」呢！

我們可以學到什麼

這次購買駭客任務 NFT 是我第一次參與 NFT 的開賣活動，以下我想藉常見的行銷 4P 做個簡單的案例分析，並總結我們可以從中學到什麼。

Promotion促銷

《駭客任務》的 IP 無疑是強大的，因此 Nifty’s 和華納兄弟不用花太多精神在行銷上，他們只需要把開賣的消息放出去就好了，《駭客任務》的粉絲自然會蜂擁而至。況且，有很多想大賺一筆的 NFT 投資者也虎視眈眈，即便他們當中一些人根本連一集電影都沒看過。

一個小小建議。有鑒於駭客任務 NFT 的目標客群不僅是幣圈跟 NFT 的擁護者，還包含廣大的《駭客任務》系列電影粉絲，Nifty’s 和華納兄弟應該發布更多資訊宣傳他們這次的合作，不然有些人可能會質疑華納兄弟為什麼會選擇跟這樣的新血合作，若能解釋這次發行的 NFT 和最新的《駭客任務：復活》電影有沒有什麼關係會更好。

Product 產品

駭客任務的 NFT 自然會大賣，又因為最早的一部電影是 22 年前發行的，可以合理推斷原始粉絲會希望自己收藏增加的不僅僅是一個 jpeg 檔案而已。

如同最近很紅的遊戲Axie Infinity 利用「遊戲化金融」的特色吸引玩家，Nifty’s 透過任務和獎勵吸引新舊粉絲的目光，讓 NFT 既可以變身又可以玩遊戲實在是很聰明的設計，對這種知名 IP 的合作企劃尤其適用。

此外，Nifty’s 的 NFT 會在 Palm 網絡上運作，一個乾淨又符合永續經營理念的 NFT 無疑是受歡迎的。

基於上述幾點，不論在產品特性、互動性，或是永續經營層面，這次的駭客任務 NFT 都是一個超出預期的作品。

Price 價格

NFT 的價格通常範圍很廣，所以這次一個駭客任務 NFT 售價 50 美元真是佛心價格。目前全部 10 萬個 NFT 都已完售，有興趣的人必須到 Nifty’s 的轉售平台才能購買了。

要注意的是這些 NFT 在明年 2 月應該可以轉移到全世界最大的 NFT 平台 OpenSea 上交易，到時候二級市場的價格可能會水漲船高，同時別忘了，若要把 NFT 從 Palm 鏈移到以太坊你還要多付手續費來抵消你的碳足跡。

Place 地點

地點/銷售平台是這次發行計畫最低分的部分，從災難的開賣過程中，我們可以看到 Nifty’s 並沒有準備好執行這麼大的案子。它應該和廠商確認開賣當天會有足夠的雲端流量，並跟它的支付夥伴 Stripe 要求更多的支援，但是它卻讓粉絲失望了。

接下來 Nifty’s 必須解決所有沒結案的問題，並確保下一步的紅藍藥丸變身任務可以順利執行。Nifty’s 在開賣後收到了幾千份投訴表單，因為我自己的問題單也還沒獲得回覆，猜想他們目前還是處於人手不足的情況。

任何一間拿到大單的新手公司在發行重要產品前，一定要好好檢視自己的執行能力、確保一切支援都能就緒，並作無數次的演練方能上場，大家可以引以為戒。
